Welcome to Lake Oswego, Oregon. The year is 1968 and, while the world is spinning off its axis, Lake Oswego Junior High School is nicely insulated by location and money. The pervasive and all-important cliques maneuver for dominance and rumble using their newly discovered weapons of gossip and innuendo. Protagonist Alec Lowery observes, “Like he’s Jane frigging Goodall,” and quickly comes to the conclusion that first casualty of junior high is the truth. Living in a “Strategic Hamlet” such as Lake Oswego doesn’t fend off everything. When a great equalizer such as cancer strikes they quickly find out who can cope and who can’t—who their real friends are and who aren’t. Who can be counted on when the chips are down and who can’t. The Lowery Twins call their doctor Dr. Mengele because of all the torture treatments he dreams up for young Joe. They liken him to the generals in Vietnam that famously state that one must destroy a country in order to save it. To the twins Chemo is Zyclon-B and radiation was just about the coolest thing on the planet until it fell into the evil hands of Dr. Mengele and he started aiming it directly at Joe. The Irish Catholic Lowery family is also following Bobby Kennedy’s campaign and is hopeful of Camelot’s return—visions of touch football on the south lawn dancing in their heads.
