About Our Book:
Someone once asked me if I ever wrote fictions. “No,” I replied. “I have too many stories from my own life to write about. They’re so bizarre I have no need to dream up imaginary plots!” Most of the stories in this collection are personal observations, episodes and vignettes from my own travels in Turkey, Poland, the U.S., Germany and China. Other are stories from my mother, my father, my nephew Serdar in Izmir, cousin Betty in Littlehampton, cousin Anni Winkelmann Hecht in Berlin, and friend Gudrum Middell in Leipzig. The collection also includes two short stories from my brother Michael and niece Karen in Japan. My children and family have enjoyed hearing these stories so dear to my heart. In their telling, I relive long ago experiences and refresh the views from the windows of memory. May they bring you new glimpses of the human spirit as well.

About the Author:
After my first retirement as English Teaching Officer in the U.S. Foreign Service in 1990, and before my next career as ESL teacher at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute in my hometown of Spokane, Washington, I joined a group of volunteer English teachers from Baltimore bound for the port of Xiamen, their sister city in southern China. It proved to be an intensely hot, humid, highly educational, and truly fabulous experience: Glimpses from a Short Trip to China. Now I live close to my four children in the Seattle area of Washington state. I correspond by phone and email with my youngest brother and his family in Japan, my cousins in England and Germany and myriad relatives by marriage in Turkey. Also with former colleagues, students, and old friends in those countries. Which is not to overlook Poland and its special place in my heart: I first went to Poznan University as a Fulbright teacher, then ten years later I served in the U. S. Information Service in Warsaw. My favorite themes throughout these stories deal with the strange coincidences in life when people re-connect in unexpected places: Mama and the Two-Party Line and A Chance Encounter at the Greyhound Bus Station. Similarly, I'm intrigued by epiphanies, those lightning-like flashes of comprehension that strike at odd moments: The Mystery of the Black Box and The Universality of Lullabies. Most of all, I'm intrigued by the mysterious dreams and strange twists of fate my grandparents experienced journeying from Germany to meet each other again in the New World: Dreams, Parts 1-III. In writing down their story, particularly when Anna insists on clinging to her dream, I always felt a delicate tingling in my scalp. And I feel it even now. A reminder, perhaps, of deep familial connections with an ancestor for whom I was named.
