Hinton Harrison’s wonderful new book, My Journey for PEACE, has a confessional prose style that reminds me of Jack Kerouac’s books that I read when I was a college student in the fifties. Like Kerouac, Hinton journeyed alone around America and the world, trying to break free from society’s strictures and find meaning to life.
His childhood was Dickensian. Shuttled between a variety of abusive stepmothers and fathers, he became a poster child for juvenile delinquency.
Ultimately, however, his spirit triumphed over his childhood adversity. As a young adult, finished with his military service in Vietnam, he led a nomadic life. He tried a variety of careers, most notably as a successful professional clown with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Along the way, he discovered a latent talent as an artist. Today he is also a filmmaker, an author, a confidante, and a friend of many celebrities.
