| About
Our Book: |
| The year: 1973. Singapore. A time of explosive change. Political instability, inflation, shortages of raw materials, government regulations, and an oil embargo are threatening local companies. Corporations are elbowing in on men like Ken Summer, American entrepreneur. Independent, headstrong, Ken is the manager of Timberline, controlled by Toh, a canny Singapore Chinese with sense enough not to keep a tight rein on Ken's management--smart enough to know that Ken is the best there is: he has brought the once fledgling concern to prominence. But their existence is threatened with the times. Ken's walking a tightrope, trying to marshal support from his colleagues, who are more interested in their own concerns than in pulling together--especially the Paridah brothers in collusion with the corporate raider, Dawe, trying to trump their subsidiary out of the corporation. Even May Ling, Ken's beautiful omniscient secretary, finds herself at cross purposes via her labor feminist ambitions, in bed with Tong, the rabid union leader. And willing to use Ken's sexual obsession with her to achieve them. Ken gets wind of meetings between Toh and Dawe, whose speciality is sacking corporations for the one prize. Ken has that prize: a timber concession near the Thai border with a new strain of wood that will revolutionize the industry. Dawe doesn't know the true source of this wood is elsewhere, secretly secured by Ken--who's risked everything to keep this secret, so he can develop this island paradise as a modern day Lord Jim. Assisted ably by Reese, the outlaw entrepreneur, crazy, violent--honest to a fault; DV, the bush pilot alcoholic, who poses as a Minister of Parliament; and Sim, the only one at Timberline who has not turned against Ken.
