About Our Book:
Hospitals have played an important role in the social welfare system for over two centuries. As charitable and not-for-profit institutions, hospitals have served the under-privilege by providing free or low-cost services to the community. In current scenarios, government policies and the economics of the healthcare system bolstered these charitable behaviors of hospitals. This dissertation explores the current trend and changes in the charitable behavior of hospitals towards its communities resulting from the intense market driven pressures that encompass healthcare reforms in the new millennium. The purpose of this publication is to assess the differences in charitable behavior of hospitals in different stages of managed care evolution and to make a realistic comparison between the way the hospital industry was meant to serve the community vs. the way hospital business is currently driven.
