| Facing all odds, Marta a young European girl, came to New York to start a business in a “Man’s World.” This was unheard of in the year of 1920. Gangsters were meeting the ferry from Ellis Island, promising naive, young girls a job with excitement, and a glamorous life, only to find themselves in the life of prostitution, better known as “White Slavery.” The “Roaring Twenties”- a time of change - fashions, music, dancing, transportation all met with a new challenge for Marta. Prohibition, Women’s Suffrage, Bootlegging, and the crash all played a part in Marta’s new life. With her determination, or “sisu,” would Marta weather it all to become successful in a strange new world? Had she made the right decision to leave the security of her home and family? (She missed them already.) She would be entering a new world, where she dreamed that the streets were paved with gold. Could she find the man of her dreams - someone who would treat her as an equal? Or was this all fantasy. This was 1920. What destiny was in store for her? |
