| About
Our Book: |
| What happens to little girls who have big hearts, dreams and aspirations, but aren?t nurtured, loved, and supported? What happens to them when God has ordained and predestined one to be a Nurse and a servant of God, who recognizes her purpose to house, feed, and dress those in need? What happens to the other, who became a sociologist, committed to helping other women recognize the difference between charity, love, and domestic violence? What can happen? Anything. From systemic houses to kinship care, suspecting that you weren't wanted by your immediate guardians aren't the worst things that can happen. The worst thing is to wake up some 40 years later as an Evangelist and Family Counselor, only to discover that what you thought as a child was actually a reality. But if you are covered you also realize that it wasn't your fault. We were born. However there are no pictures to prove it. Completing her fight with Cancer, our mother with total confidence, whispered that we would be protected and given the courage to overcome: Even though she was leaving a four and ten year old that no one really wanted. At least, not until the Foster Care system indicated that a stipend would be granted. Finally, we were placed in the kinship care of our uncle who was married to a very stingy, contemptible, intimidating woman. She ruled with an iron spirit and any whipping object she could get her hands on. We never could figure out how come her belief in God didn't make her kinder. We followed a strict schedule. Between school and church, we spent all of our free time as "Cinderella" maids. One rationed meal a day was our reward for room and board. The fairy tale reality would deteriorate our health, but never our creative spirits. Sure, it was our creativeness and courage that helped us to escape, and no matter how hard we tried to "backslide" experimenting with champagne, beer, and pills: It was God who taught us that moderation in all things will keep you free! Thus in the fullness of time, through the Great Spirit and mother's beliefs, we have been redeemed and restored consistently from that which the adversary had planned to destroy. |

Ms. Olivia Quick is spiritually dynamic, powerfully creative and pours out her heart for those less fortunate. Her life experiences personify courage. She gives much of her time encouraging, supporting, and advocating with unwavering energy. She developed/coordinated TEACH, Theater Enrichment and Community Hopefuls. This was an outreach network of dedicated volunteers and parents. Ms. Quick's workshops focused attention on motivating adolescents and young mothers at risk toward the goal of becoming spiritually sound adults. She founded/directed Star Company Theater for all nationalities. The ensemble performed in hospitals, institutions, Nursing homes, Special Olympics, churches and continually raised funds for several organizations. For eight years she was the Coordinator for the Staten Island AIDS Task Force, Family Support Program. She attended and eulogized many funerals and gave support to grieving families: Even after her niece passed away, she found the energy to leave work and travel every weekend by train to Long Island to visit other neighbors who needed her HIV/AIDS counseling assistance. Ms. Quick has always been involved in community empowerment. In her free time she taught Black-American history and received S.I.N.Y.'s, Borough Historian Club Award. She taught groups in housing projects, correctional facilities, created the BASE Collective (Brothers and Sisters Enrichment) to support Black young adult males in their struggles not to fall prey to drugs and jail. She has received numerous news article recognitions, which amongst them is the Butch Mangin Youth Award, Urban League and the Decade of the Child award by our former Mayor, David Dinkins. Presently, she is very concerned regarding elder abuse and provides free-advocate services toward their dignity, beauty services, and housekeeping needs. Olivia Quick is a very gregarious and unselfish human being. She graduated from Charles Evans Hughes, H.S. of the Humanities in NYC. Her Liberal Arts studies at Berkeley, S.F. California opened her passion for the theater-arts. Returning to the East Coast she found her niche on Staten Island, where she continued her studies toward her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Sociology. She is also a licensed cosmetologist. Ms. Quick has completed a poetry essay: The Healing Voices of Black Halos and her creative biography novel: Second Chances for Black Halos.
