About Our Book:
This is a compilation of the after action reports submitted by the 3d Marine Division after the battle of Iwo Jima. It contains daily summaries from division, regimental and battalion levels along with the 3d Marine Division War Diary for this period. In addtion to the unit reports, it contains a description of the Japanese defensive plans taken from CINCPAC-CINCPOA bulletin 136-45. The entire contents of this book is taken from formerly classified documents.

About the Author:
Ray Backstrom was raised in Pengilly, Minnesota, and joined the Marine Corps in 1972. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1992, moved to Missoula, Montana, and completed a degree in cartography at the University of Montana. He is currently working as a cartographer for the federal government in Ft Worth, TX, and is finishing up his masters degree in cartography. This eBook is a byproduct of his thesis which uses the battle of Iwo Jima as a model to demonstrate the usefullness of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a means of distributing historic battlefield information.
