A young Tennessee mountain boy enters the Confederate Army and finds he has a talent for leading troops in battle. The outcome of the war is well known, but this tale if of an individual rising in the ranks to captain, and of commanding a cavalry troop under the "master of guerrilla warfare," John Hunt Morgan. His activities in the "Western" theater, which was Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia, if of providing for his men while interdicting the Union's lines and cutting their supply routes. Philo Caney comes of age in his service to the Confederacy. His friendship with his sergeant and another Tennessee boy, a Union soldier, leads them through adventures, aside from the war. His arch enemy is Quincy Thompson, an outlaw terrorizing that part of Tennessee. Philo was assigned the task of stopping his outlaw activities. This leads him to the beautiful Becky Hawes, a woman he decides is to be his wife. But Becky has an understanding with Thompson. An opposing Union troop commander, Major Black-Tom Ellis, in that area, makes the war more personal for Philo. This narrative follows the historical battles, big and small, for four years in Tennessee. Dates and locations are exact as research by the author could determine. A good read for those interested in the Civil War, especially the battles outside the more famous campaigns in Virginia.

the Author: |
The author is a veteran of 28 years in the U.S. Army, his career having spanned the period from World War II through the end of the Vietnam conflict. He rose through the ranks from private to Lieutenant Colonel. Oglesby served in Airborne, Special Forces and Special Operations, and was a battalion commander in Vietnam. His exemplary service brought him a number of awards, including Silver Stars, Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, seven Bronze Stars and numerous Army and Air Force Commendation Medals along with the Purple Heart. Colonel Oglesby and his wife Grace each have three grown sons. They now live in retirement in Seffner, Florida, where he spends his time writing and fishing.
