About Our Book:
In the "old army" a rout-steppers was one that did thing his way. The term originated in Europe in World War I when General Black-Jack Pershing's forces marching in cadence would set up vibrations that would often cause the old wooden bridges to fall in. A command to "rout-step" would allow troops to break cadence and move at their own pace, thereby eliminating vibrations. It was not considered a derogative term!

This story is of a young man, already decided to make a career in the army, being sent to Korea in the second year of that war. He joined the famous 17th Infantry Regiment (The Buffaloes) and in the fierce fighting after the Chinese entered the war, he is wounded and captured by the Chinese Communists.

Later his captors decides to execute the entire group of over fifty Americans. He is the only one to survive it and his rage and anger at the vicious Chinese causes him to become adept at hunting and killing them. His skills soon become apparent and he is given a commission.

Again he is wounded and captured by the Communists. As a member of a large group of prisoners being moved to the north he continues to resist and tries to escape. He finally does then rescues a downed air force pilot and together they make their was back to the south.

He rises in rank to captain commanding a company in the Buffaloes before he is medically evacuated home.

The battles and times depicted are accurate and the events resisting the Chicoms actually happened, even to the disrupting of the enemy in their plan to humiliate the United Nations.

A good read of the valiant men of the 17th US Infantry Regiment fighting (at that time) a numerically superior Chinese army in Korea in 1952.
