| About
Our Book: |
| I am a Marine veteran who was in the first wave to hit the beach at Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945, the day after my 19th birthday. My story covers our training in Hawaii, the forty days aboard ship, hitting the beach, the battle itself, the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi, and all the trials, the friendships, the deaths of friends, my being buried alive by an artillery shell and being rescued by a buddy, my best friend being blown to bits by a mortar shell, and my second best friend having his leg blown off. It's graphic, but it's heartwarming, too, in the patriotism and courage displayed, and the faith in the future of our youth and our country. |

| About
the Author: |
William B. Madden was born in South Bend, Indiana, practically under the golden dome of the University of Notre Dame where he would later get his Master's Degree in English. At age seventeen he enlisted in the Marines and served there from 1943 to 1946. He was wounded in the historic Battle of Iwo Jima, given a medical discharge, and returned home to take advantage of the G.I. Bill to become a teacher. He taught English for thirty-five years in both high schools and colleges in Indiana, including Notre Dame, and also two Indiana University extensions in that state before retiring and moving to Florida.
