"WHAT HAPPENED TO JAMES" In time, James' interest outside of the house was great He didn't have much time for his family, His attitude, mannerisms and dwindling concern Was becoming open and quite obvious for others to see. James was being pulled and torn between opinions Which spun his life into one hectic, zig-zag course, The web was growing so much thicker each day It seemed, he couldn't even muster up any remorse. He became less concerned about Nita's feelings And wasn't very careful about what he said either, Telling the truth was no longer high among his priorities And life was becoming much more sour...than sweeter. The boys wondered why they hardly saw their father They were asleep when he went to work and when he came home, He said he was studying at the library after evening classes But, that story didn't pan out after too long. Time and chance was rearing its head With many complications, things just got worse, And the marriage that was supposed to be blessed Seemed to be in the throws of a curse. Nita was being challenged by a brazen female Insinuating herself into James', the children's and Nita's life, Everyone was caught up in a whirlwind of emotions Plagued with offense, no respect, misery and strife. One evening, Nita couldn't resist the temptation To see what Babs had that she didn't have, too, Nita never thought she would ever do such a thing But, going to Bab's house was something she felt compelled to do. Nita remembered, that, when a battle is fought You shouldn't fire, until you see the white of the enemy's eyes, She felt, that, in order to know what she was up against Meeting Babs, face-to-face, might, at that time, be wise. Since Babs was calling so many mornings To wake-up James...as if there was no clock in the house, It was about time Nita took a little action of her own So, Babs wouldn't toy with her...like a cat playing with a mouse. Babs not only called mornings on the telephone She would ride past Nita's house in the car with James, Babs didn't have the decency to keep her business discrete She was agonizing Nita, despite Nita's rights and claims. So, Nita went to Bab's house one fair evening And told her a decent woman wouldn't do the things she does, And, that, even a street-walker avoids a man's household She sneered at Nita, and asked her, who did she think she was.
